This is a similar arrangement to the one used by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for The Heist, and Pet Shop Boys for last year’s LP Electric. His next records will be released purely with Caroline, a music distributor owned by Universal. The rapper won’t be dealing with a label at all. Despite these troubles, he admitted last month that he still owed Interscope one album. Its follow-up was endlessly delayed, with Fiddy complaining on Twitter and even threatening to leak an unreleased Dr Dre song. Although he sold millions of albums for Interscope and Shady, including 15m copies of his debut, the rapper’s relationship with the labels seems to have disintegrated since 2009’s Before I Self Destruct, his least-successful LP. It’s quite possible that the rapper’s departure is a relief.
